Mr. Nadeem was a respected businessman in Lahore. His office wasn’t the biggest, nor were his prices always the lowest. But customers knew one thing:
“You may find it cheaper elsewhere, but you will never be deceived here.”
One afternoon, the Procurement Head of a big company came to discuss purchasing a 2MW generator.
After inspection and negotiation, he was ready to close the deal.
But Mr Nadeem paused.
He knew the generator had a minor technical defect. It would operate normally, but might eventually require significant expenditure.
His assistant whispered:
“Nadeem Sb, don’t mention it. It’s minor. The buyer has inspected it. Let’s close the deal.”
Nadeem Sb looked at the Procurement Head.
“Sir, before you decide, there is something you must know.”
He disclosed the defect.
The buyer was surprised.
“If you hadn’t told me, I might never have noticed it.”
Nadeem Sb smiled:
“But I would have known.”
“Is that the only reason?”
“No. Because I have to answer to Allah.”
Then he quoted the Prophet ﷺ:
“If both parties speak the truth and make everything clear, they will be blessed in their transaction. But if they conceal and lie, the blessing of their transaction will be erased.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
The buyer asked for a price adjustment and bought the generator.
Before leaving, he said:
“Nadeem Sb, today I didn’t just buy a 2MW generator. I bought your trust.”
Nadeem Sb thought the story had ended.
It hadn’t.
Months later, his phone rang.
It was the same Procurement Head.
“Nadeem Sb, we have a much larger requirement. I want you to supply it.”
He had received lower quotations and better commercial offers from competitors.
But he remembered one thing:
“When you could have hidden a defect and earned more, you chose to tell me the truth. Now I have to entrust someone with billions. I want the man whose honesty I have already experienced.”
Nadeem Sb’s eyes filled with thanksgiving.
“Ya Allah… now I understand Barakah.”
That evening, he explained to his son, Taha:
“We often think profit is what we receive from a customer. But Barakah is what Allah allows to grow, remain beneficial and bring goodness.”
Taha asked:
“What if honesty reduces today’s profit?”
Nadeem Sb smiled:
“Then sacrifice today’s profit—but never sacrifice tomorrow’s Barakah.”
THE BUSINESS LESSON
SELLER: Don’t hide defects. Don’t exaggerate. Don’t manipulate information.
BUYER: Don’t deceive. Don’t use false excuses to force down the price. Don’t conceal material information.
BOTH: Be truthful. Be transparent. Be fair.
Profit is what you earn.
Barakah is what Allah allows to remain, grow and benefit you.
A dishonest deal may increase today’s profit.
A truthful deal may reduce it.
But truth can build the trust that brings tomorrow’s biggest opportunity.
The ultimate question isn’t how much profit you made but how much Barakah did Allah put into what you made?”
