Long ago, I used to read a famous writer on a regular basis. He used to say “if God is with you, nobody can be against you”. I used to wonder how can the God be with you; then one day I found the answer when I read the verse:

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ مَعَ الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا وَّ الَّذِیْنَ هُمْ مُّحْسِنُوْنَ(14-128)

“Indeed, God is with those who are constantly mindful of Him and act excellently”

Being mindful of Him is a matter between a person and the God; but excellence in deeds is often a matter between a person and others. This riddle was also solved one day.

Let me tell you a story about a successful business that exemplifies the concept of excellence i.e. going above and beyond for customers.

In medieval times, there was a baker known for his “baker’s dozen.” Instead of selling the standard twelve donuts in a pack, he always included an extra donut, making it thirteen. This small act of generosity made him popular among customers and set him apart from his competitors.

Inspired by this story, a fruit vendor selling bananas decided to follow suit. Instead of selling twelve bananas in a bunch, he started offering thirteen. This simple change transformed his business and his life. By exceeding customer expectations and providing more value, he went from an ordinary vendor to an extraordinary one.

As business owners or even salesperson, it is essential to perform beyond what we promise and deliver more than what customers expect. We should strive not only to satisfy them but to delight them. By becoming a best-in-class company and setting a benchmark for others, we can create a loyal customer base and ensure our own success.

In Arabic, there is a concept called “ehsaan”, which means striving for excellence, graciousness, and benevolence. It goes hand in hand with the principle of fairness and justice, or “adl,” which involves fulfilling one’s obligations and respecting the rights of others.

But “ehsaan” goes beyond that— it means doing more than what is required or expected.

When we practice “ehsaan” in our business, we not only create a positive impact on our customers but also receive divine assistance when we need it most. By going the extra mile, we build trust, loyalty, and a reputation for exceptional service. So, let us remember the power of “ehsaan” and strive to exceed expectations, making both our customers and ourselves winners in the process.

However, remember giving more than your customers expect will not happen automatically unless you implement it in your whole life. You will have to first start doing it from your family, parents, siblings, neighbors, colleagues etc. Because charity must begin at home.
