In the early 1960s, Pakistan’s growth rate was 7%, with manufacturing growing at 7% and agriculture at 9%. Pakistan had become the fastest-growing country in the world. During the same decade, Pakistan lent 120 million rupees to Germany, and the German Chancellor officially thanked the Pakistani government for this generosity. Under President Ayub’s leadership, Pakistan presented its first surplus budget, and large-scale barrages were built as part of the country’s first five-year plan. During this period, Pakistan also helped South Korea by creating a five-year plan for them, which Korea fully implemented, leading to their development.
Until the 1970s, Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, known as “The Bride of Cities,” was one of the most peaceful, beautiful, and modern cities in the world. Its streets were washed at night, and all major airlines had offices there. PIA, with its motto “Great People to Fly With,” was one of the world’s best airlines, and even American presidents considered it an honor to fly with them. At that time, PIA was the first Asian airline to have jet planes.
During this era, Pakistan built one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, Islamabad. In the 1960s, when Pakistan’s President Ayub Khan visited the United States, the American President, along with his entire cabinet, the heads of all three military branches, and the American public, enthusiastically welcomed him at the airport, which greatly enhanced Pakistan’s reputation globally.
This was Pakistan of the past, which was rapidly on the path of development, but unfortunately, it is now in reverse gear.
I fail to understand what happened, why and when?
Single largest reason of the predicament of my beloved country!
